  1. The ancient site of Carthage then part of the Muslim world, Tunisia
  2. became a French protectorate on May 12, 1881 and independent on
  3. March 20, 1956.  Habib Bourguiba has headed the country since
  4. independence.  Tunisia is a member of the Arab League,
  5. and is currently the site of the PLO's headquarters.. 
  6. Tunisia survived a Libyan raid against the southern mining center
  7. of Gafsa in January 1980 and some 1,000 rioters were arrested in
  8. 1984 following an announced 125% increase in the price of bread. Bourgiba,
  9. who had declared himself president for life, was replaced in a bloodless
  10. coup by Bin Ali in 1988.
